Course Description:

In this unit standard the learner will be introduced to basic firefighting techniques. For the duration of the course, we will identify the types of fires that exist and the types of fire extinguishing equipment that is used today. The course will also focus on fire prevention and the practical use of basic fire extinguishers.

Module 1: Upon completion of this module you will be familiar with the following fire safety principles:

  • Characteristics of dust explosions
  • Precautionary measures against dust explosions
  • The classes of fires according to industry practice

Module 2: Upon completion of this module you will be familiar with the following fire safety principles:

  • The prevention of fires in relation to general organisational housekeeping
  • Fire prevention and protection
  • Firefighting strategy
  • Firefighting and safety equipment
  • Problems that may cause fires and hamper fire control
  • Poor housekeeping

Module 3: Upon completion of this module you will be familiar with the following fire safety principles:

  • The basic firefighting equipment as provided by the organisation
  • Portable extinguishers
  • Activating the extinguisher
  • Fire hydrants
  • General guidelines for the placing of fire extinguishers
