HIRA – Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

Course Description:

This unit standard is for learners who have to demonstrate their ability to conduct a base-line risk assessment in the work place. in addition to this, learners will be exposed to hazard identification and risk assessments, but also to those simply looking to update their, already present,
knowledge of the matters.

Module 3: Identify training requirements for unskilled workers working in confined spaces & train the workers
Module 4: Plan and implement emergency procedures
Module 5: Explain the relevant occupational health and safety regulations

Learning Outcomes:

Module 1: After completing this section, you will be able to:

  • Identify hazards relative to gasses
  • Identify hazards relative to installation processes of material and plant
  • Identify hazards relative to the operation of plant and equipment

Module 2: After completing this section, you will be able to:

  • Identify protective clothing or equipment for the various tapes of hazards encountered in confined spaces
  • Demonstrate the proper use of protective clothing or equipment for the various hazards situations

Module 3: After completing this section, you will be able to:

  • Prepare or secure training programmes to sensitize unskilled workers to the dangers of working in confined spaces
  • Train unskilled workers in order to sensitize them to the dangers of working in confined spaces and the need for appropriate action

Module 4: After completing this section, you will be able to:

  • Identify resources to handle an emergency
  • Prepare a plan of action for emergency and implementation

Module 5: After completing this section, you will be able to:

  • Explain the application of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (no 85 of 1993) relative to working in confined spaces
  • Identify and apply measures required in respect of the legislation
